  • Benefits: Longer, Increased & darker eyelashes.

The Science Behind Latisse

LATISSE® enhances the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, leading to the gradual transformation of your lashes.

There are many articles you can find on line about the science behind Latisse, but the question we get asked most frequently is-
“Will LATISSE® turn my blue eyes brown?”

The active ingredient in LATISSE® is Bimatoprost, which lengthens the stage of eyelash growth, resulting in an increased number of new eyelashes.

Bimatoprost is also the active ingredient in LUMIGAN® 0.01%, a prescription eye drop approved to lower eye pressure in patients with ocular hypertension.

Addressing the Eye Color Change Concern

One of the most frequently asked questions is, “Will Latisse turn my blue eyes brown?”

The Origin of the Eye Color Change Concern:

  • LUMIGAN® and Iris Hyperpigmentation: Bimatoprost, the active ingredient in both Latisse and Lumigan, was initially noted to cause iris hyperpigmentation in 1-2% of patients using Lumigan eye drops directly on the surface of their eyes.
  • Note: LUMIGAN® is applied as drops directly into the eye.
  • Latisse is meant to be applied carefully with a small applicator brush along the lash line avoiding direct contact with the surface of the eyes.
  • Exposure Level: This application method exposes the eye to only approximately 5% of the Bimatoprost used in Lumigan.
  • Clinical Trials of LATISSE® : Importantly, this side effect was not observed in any of the 300 patients during the initial clinical trials for Latisse.

Minimizing the Risk

The bottom line is that when used correctly, there is an extremely small chance of seeing any iris hyperpigmentation with Latisse.

  • Strict Application Instructions: Apply Latisse only on the upper eyelid, avoiding the lower lid and direct contact with the eye.
  • Regular Monitoring: Regular check-ups with your doctor can help monitor any changes and adjust the treatment if necessary.
